Johnny Kelley Statue
The “Young at Heart” statue near Newton City Hall at the base of
Heartbreak Hill depicts Johnny Kelley, otherwise known as Mr. Marathon, as a 27-year-old when he won his first Boston Marathon, and as an 84-year old, when he ran his 61 st and last Boston Marathon. It is in honor of a man who embodied a youthful spirit. In fact, whenever Johnny Kelley spoke to an audience, he ended his remarks by singing the famous Frank Sinatra song, Young At Heart.
Runner's Tip: Don't be fooled into thinking the worst is over when you see the statue, when in fact it's yet to come.
